I know “white bread” has become synonymous with being boring, plain, and uninspired. But I think we should reconsider that! After trying a ton of different white breads for this taste test, I’ve come to realize that white bread is more interesting and varied than we give it credit for. Most importantly, it’s super freaking delicious.
We gathered a bunch of the “best” white breads on the market to see which were actually the best and which ones would not be making an appearance in our upcoming sandwiches. Below are the breads that stood out and made us want to make a grilled cheese ASAP.

- Nature’s Own Perfectly Crafted Thick Sliced White Bread
-
Nature’s Own hits all the notes you want in white bread: It’s super soft, lightly sweet, and has a mild flavor that wouldn’t overpower sandwich fillings. It would go well with peanut butter, banana, and honey. It would suit a grilled cheese or a tuna salad sandwich. Practically everything would be good between two slices of this bread. It’s also tasty enough to eat on its own, heavily slathered with butter. I’ll say it: This is the perfect white bread. Buy it ASAP!

- Alfaro’s Artesano Bakery Bread
-
Alfaro’s Artesano Bakery Bread is truly bakery style. The slices are so thick and pillowy you could take a nap on one. I cannot imagine the phenomenal french toast that could be created with this heavenly soft bread. That said, this would also be great for a savory sandwich. A BLTA on this Artesano would feel exactly like something you’d order from the lunch menu at a nice restaurant. This is white bread that would impress guests.

- Wonder Bread Classic White
-
I was skeptical that Wonder Bread would actually taste good, but it did! It has a mild sweetness and wonderfully neutral flavor. The texture is very light and airy. This bread would be perfect to play a supporting role in a sandwich. It’s cheap, it’s always been there for you, and it makes one hell of a grilled cheese sandwich. Wonder Bread, I’m sorry I ever doubted you. You are truly incredible and I should respect my elders.

- Oroweat Organic Rustic White Thin-Sliced Bread
-
The fact that this bread is thin-sliced and “rustic” makes it just the right texture for me. It’s not too thick and it’s not too thin. It sits in that ideal middle ground that Goldilocks would deem “just right.” The fact that it’s described as “rustic” makes me feel like I should take this bread camping and toast it over an open fire. Or dip it into a stew that was cooked in a witch’s kettle. Both sound appealing to me.

- Dave’s Killer Bread Organic Thin Sliced White Sandwich Bread
-
Dave’s makes excellent bread and their Organic Thin Sliced White Sandwich Bread is no exception. The thin slices make it ideal for anyone who regularly finds themself complaining about their sandwiches having “too much bread” or people who like hollowed-out bagels. If you’re all about toppings and the bread is simply the vehicle to transport them to your mouth, buy this bread! Don’t let me sell it short, though. This is a quality product that regular bread lovers will also enjoy.
