The 4 Best French Toast Sticks at the Grocery Store

If you’re on the hunt for the best French toast sticks at the grocery store, you’re probably looking for something that approximates the transcendent pleasure of Burger King French toast sticks. I get it. I love those damn things, too (almost as much as I love a Croissan’wich with ham). They’re a little crispy on the outside, fluffy but still a touch eggy inside with just the right amount of vanilla extract to complement the fried bread. I wouldn’t say I found a dupe for Burger King French toast sticks, but I found the best frozen French toast sticks you can make at home without schlepping to the drive-thru first thing in the a.m.

The best French toast sticks at the grocery store taste fresh instead of tasting like stale oil. They don’t just taste like greasy fried bread—they taste like breakfast, albeit breakfast that was mass produced in a factory somewhere. Frozen French toast sticks don’t have to taste homemade to taste good—they’re kind of their own thing. Once you accept them for what they are, you’re in for a sweet treat. I will say that cinnamon French toast sticks overperformed in this taste test—a bit of warm spice goes a long way toward making these suckers taste like more than oily bread—but if you’re spice averse, there are options here for you, too.

A note on prep: I made one batch of these frozen French toast sticks in the countertop oven, then it occurred to me that pretty much everyone is microwaving these things, right? So I cooked them both ways. They’re definitely better in the oven, but the best French toast sticks should taste good and cook in no time flat, so we looked for ones that microwaved well, too. Here are the best French toast sticks (and bites) we found.

Farm Rich Cinnamon French Toast Sticks

When it came to the best cinnamon French toast sticks, it was pretty much a draw, so I went ahead and included both. In the countertop oven, these Farm Rich cinnamon French toast sticks came out crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. They’re oily and decadent, but not so oily that you can’t eat them on the go without making a huge mess. In fact, I’d say these are the best French toast sticks to eat in the car on your way to work, no syrup needed. The sweet cinnamon coating does a lot of work and makes these taste excellent all on their own. Just don’t yell at me if you get some grease on the steering wheel.

Kroger Cinnamon French Toast Sticks

As I said, Kroger’s cinnamon French toast sticks aren’t a dupe for Burger King French toast sticks (they’re coated in cinnamon, for starters), but these came the closest to capturing the wonderful decadence of fast food French toast sticks. They’re very greasy, but they also crisp up nicely. I think I left them in the oven just a tad longer than recommended, but overcooking them isn’t necessarily a terrible strategy if you don’t want them to be limp. If you can tolerate a greasy fast food breakfast—or, better yet, if you covet a greasy fast food breakfast—Kroger makes the best French toast sticks.

Great Value Cinnamon French Toast Bites

These make the list largely because I love the format. Why get stuck holding a French toast stick when you can simply pop a French toast bite in the ol’ pie hole? Plus, if you like a crispy French toast stick, these just make sense—there’s more surface area than interior, and if you heat them in the oven, they really come out nicely. My colleague Justine Sterling liked these the best because they weren’t as greasy as some of the other French toast sticks and bites we tried. Plus, the cinnamon flavor is delicious. Our local Walmart didn’t have the bites in original flavor (minus cinnamon), but I’d be willing to bet those are pretty great, too.

Farm Rich Original French Toast Sticks

These are the best frozen French toast sticks we tried, not because they approximate fast food French toast sticks, but because they actually taste like French toast—imagine that! They taste like they originated as bread that was dredged in egg, which I can’t say about a lot of the other sticks we tried. They’re eggy but still fluffy, almost like they’re made from brioche, and they have a nice neutral flavor, unlike some of the other “plain” French toast sticks we tried, which had an off-putting nutmeg flavor. These are sweet and a touch oily and have a bit of savoriness on the finish. I didn’t try any of these with syrup because I wanted them to be able to stand on their own, but I gotta say—these are gonna be really good in some maple syrup
