Pop-Tarts make me ask lots of questions. Are these a breakfast or a dessert? Should they be eaten toasted or untoasted? And most importantly, what is the crust part of the Pop-Tart called? The crust? The skin? The shell? While this taste test brought me no answers to these questions, it did help me determine the best Pop-Tart flavors.
Greg Johnson, master of all things social media at Mythical, stepped in to eat an unreasonable amount of Pop-Tarts with us and make this list. While there are so many truly incredible flavors, we were able to narrow it down to the seven we think you should be putting in your toaster.

- Frosted S’mores
-
S’mores Pop-Tarts take the top spot on this list because, in addition to being delicious, they are the most like the edible item they claim to emulate. Served warm, they transform into a literal, actual toasted s’more. The marshmallow is gooey. The chocolate is melty. The pastry takes on a roasted aroma. Don’t get me wrong, they’re great untoasted, too. At room temp, they have a pleasantly solidified chocolate-and-marshmallow filling like a candy bar. Plus, out of all the Pop-Tarts we tried, they have the most even and respectable frosting distribution (something extremely important to me).

- Frosted Strawberry
-
I’m the type of person who would never choose a fruit-flavored dessert over a chocolate dessert. Ever. It’s important to know that about me because now you’ll understand how huge it is when I say this: I liked these more than most of the chocolate Pop-Tarts. The strawberry flavor is realistic, the top has great frosting coverage, and they are just sweet enough. Toasted, they feel almost like a pastry from a bakery. Danny Palumbo, my fellow Sporked writer, insisted that these are “a good breakfast” that people should be eating like breakfast sandwiches or stacks of pancakes, without feeling guilty for eating something that’s considered junk food first thing in the morning.

- Frosted Brown Sugar Cinnamon
-
The frosted Brown Sugar Cinnamon flavor is synonymous with Pop-Tarts. When I told friends we did this taste test, almost every single person’s response was the same. “Brown Sugar Cinnamon was the best, right?” No! They’re not. But they are very, very good. They’re pure sugar to the dome in a way that you can’t not like. These might not be the best ones for breakfast because they’re so sugary, but I’d grab one for a snack or late-night treat instead.

- Frosted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
-
Frosted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Pop-Tarts seem like they are stuffed with actual cookie dough. Try them untoasted and it’s like you’re eating raw cookie dough; throw them in the toaster, and it’s like you’re eating a warm, soft cookie. They’re great both ways. This is probably as close as you can get to eating dessert for breakfast, which rules. Because of that, I imagine that they would be super popular with kids (and kids at heart). Also, these were Greg’s favorite! After one bite, his eyes got wide and he announced that “this is the one.”

- Frosted Wild Berry
-
I desperately wanted my mom to buy these for me when I was a child because they did a Wild Berry Pop-Tart x Wild Thornberrys collab that was right up my alley. Turns out, the secret to these being good wasn’t just in the packaging. They’re tasty! They have the perfect level of sweetness. Plus the blue-and-purple frostings on top are so cute. My only complaint is that I wish these had a tad more filling.

- Frosted Blueberry
-
Once again, fruit is not typically for me, but I love these Frosted Blueberry Pop-Tarts! They are so fragrant and fruity and even a little bit tangy. The icing distribution is wonderful. When warmed, they are reminiscent of a real pastry you’d get at a bakery. They’re so good that the only note I wrote down for these during our tasting was, “Incredible when hot!” These were also the most flavorful variety when untoasted.

- Pretzel Cinnamon Sugar
-
Let me be clear: ONLY eat this one toasted. Untoasted it’s like fine, whatever. Toasted? This smells like, as Greg puts it, “walking towards Auntie Anne’s” in the mall. It tastes like warm, soft pretzel and salty crunchy pretzel. Danny pointed out that the crust gives off “pie vibes” because it’s a little flaky at the edges. It might have the best texture of any Pop-Tart on the market. If you’re ready to open your heart to a new type of Pop-Tart, try these!

Rhett & Link’s Pick
Wild Berry Pop-Tart
Rhett & Link agreed with me that the Wild Berry Pop-Tarts are absolutely out-of-this-world tasty. They ranked them the #1 Pop-Tart flavor in their 2020 Pop-Tart taste test, beating out our #1 pick: S’mores.
