Remember, back in June, when we told you that Hot Chocolate Pop-Tarts were sort of coming back this holiday season? Well, it’s been eleven months since then (October lasted approximately 182 days, amounting to six of them), and Frosted Marshmallow Hot Chocolate Pop Tarts have finally hit shelves. Will this taste like a carbon cocoa copy of Kellogg’s previous attempts to sell hot chocolate Pop-Tarts, or a new Pop-Tart flavor entirely? I tried them to find out.
Before we get into this, a little context: Kellogg’s released two hot chocolate Pop Tart flavors in 2007 and 2012 under different names. Many people online claim that both tasted pretty good—just nothing like hot chocolate. Obviously, this time around, we have to see Pop-Tarts get the cozy holiday flavor right.

Upon first taste, my immediate thought was, “I’ve had a Pop-Tart just like this before.” But as I kept eating, subtle flavor nuances kept surprising me.
Pros: Let’s get the big question out of the way: Yes, the pastry dough does, believe it or not, carry the taste of hot chocolate—specifically, the powdered instant stuff, not anything fancy. It also smells like hot cocoa, too. But if you aren’t searching for those sweeter, creamier notes of cocoa powder, it’s easy to mistake the pastry’s flavor for plain-old chocolate. Warmed up, the marshmallow filling is nice and gooey without being too sweet. I was concerned the frosting and filling combo would overwhelm my taste buds with sugar, but nope! These hot cocoa Pop-Tarts make a pretty cozy breakfast, if you ask me. And more interesting than last year’s “sugar cookie” holiday Pop-Tarts, too.
Cons: When I said, “I’ve had a Pop-Tart just like this before,” I’m not referring to the ghost of Pop-Tarts’ past. These taste a little too similar to Pop-Tart Frosted S’mores—our #1 favorite Pop Tarts flavor here at Sporked. Basically, for something advertised as a seasonal, new PopTart flavor, this isn’t very unique. The frosting comes stamped with different images of hot cocoa mugs, which sounds cute in theory…but look pretty cursed, like temporary tattoos gone awry. Plus, the frosting has poor coverage—the pastry edges have a wide empty margin. All that said, I’m not mad at these!
