Cherry-on-Top or Sour Flop? Our Review of Cherry Sour Patch Kids

Finally, in the year 2024, Sour Patch Kids have boldly gone where so many have gone before: to the cherry flavor. And that’s all the shade I’m going to throw, because, 1.) cherry is my favorite candy flavor of all time, and 2.) Cherry Sour Patch Kids might be the best “new” Sour Patch flavor to come out…ever? Let’s discuss.

First of all, in fairness, Cherry Sour Patch Kids are not completely new to the scene. You may have seen Maynards Cherry Sour Patch Kids Blasters on Amazon, which are sold in Canada but not in the U.S. Plus, Reddit users reported spotting Cherry Sour Patch Kids briefly in convenience stores back in 2022. Turns out, Sour Patch Kids Cherry was a limited edition flavor that came and went so quickly, people barely noticed. But now, these elusive cherry candies are finally back with a recipe upgrade—and they’re here to stay, officially, as a permanent new Sour Patch Kids flavor. Thank the cherry-flavor gods. The universe is now one step closer to getting back to the good timeline, I can feel it.

New Sour Patch Kids!

Cherry Sour Patch Kids

It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that these Cherry Sour Patch Kids are shaped like two cherries attached to a green stem. I’m not sure I can really fault the design, though. That might be more of a me issue.

Pros: Cherry lovers and cherry haters agree: Cherry candy shouldn’t taste medicinal. And Cherry Sour Patch Kids are the furthest thing from cough medicine you can get. The flavor is pure cherry. And sweet, like a maraschino. It’s quite lovely, and everyone at Sporked literally brightened as soon as they tried one.

Cons: Because it’s relevant, you’re about to learn something very weird about me. Ready? I’m not much of a gummy person. Chewing on corn syrup, to me, is simply unpleasant. But me and malic acid? We go way back. Love the stuff. So when I snack on Sour Patch Kids, I only snack on them while they’re still sour. When all the sour dust is gone, I chuck the rest of the gummy in the trash. My amazing, beautiful, brilliant editor Gwynedd Stuart is currently reading this, horrified—just like you, I’m sure. But thanks to my freaky eating habits, I’ve determined that these new Sour Patch Kids are not sour enough. I expected the tartness of the cherry to enhance the overall sour experience, but alas, I was mistaken. Still, they’re yummy. In a fruit salad of Sour Patch Kids gummies, I just know you’ll cherry-ish them.
