Hole-y Breakfast! New Pillsbury Toaster Donuts Are Out Now

Yes, you read that right. Kevin from the classic Toaster Strudel ads is gonna leap oot his Lederhosen when he sees this. I know I certainly did. If the world of Pop-Tarts and Toaster Strudel is just too vanilla for you, you are in luck because Pillsbury is dunkin’ their heads into the donut world and taking those “vanilla” breakfast pastries to a sprinkled, glazed, and frosted place they’ve never been. That’s right, Pillsbury just released three flavors of Pillsbury Toaster Donut Pastries: Frosted, Rainbow Sprinkle, and Boston Cream. I know. I am sure you have questions.

Are these new Toaster Donuts shaped like donuts? How will they fit in a toaster? Will my mom actually buy them for me?

Right off the bat, no, Pillsbury Toaster Donut Pastries are not donut-shaped. In fact, they look a whole heck of a lot like Toaster Strudel—rectangles of toasty pastry goodness. That said, they are not identical to their Toaster Strudel forebears. They appear to be more bready than flaky, and according to the callout on the packaging posted by food Instagram page @candyhunting, they will have a “new donut texture!”, whatever that means.

It is unclear from the picture on the pack if they will be more cake donut- or yeast donut-adjacent (though the cross-section’s crumb looks almost pancake-like?), so I think we are just going to have to try these to find out.

The flavors are pretty self-explanatory, but let’s review. The Boston Cream flavor appears to come with a chocolate frosting packet to be spread atop a custard-filled, pillow-shaped “donut pastry.” I should also note that there apparently was a Boston cream flavor of Toaster Strudel back in the day that was discontinued, and fans seem to think this is a reboot but with the iconic “new donut texture!” going for it.  The Rainbow Sprinkle and Frosted flavors don’t look to be filled, but the Frosted pastries come with white icing to go on top and the Rainbow Sprinkle pastries come with pink icing and, you guessed, it, rainbow sprinkles.

I simply must try these and, lucky for me, they are on shelves now. As for whether I can convince my mom to buy them for me, stay tuned because I am a full-on adult and she and I live in different cities…but that’s not a “no” and I am VERY persistent, so we shall see.
