We knew this was coming. We knew that one day the candy world would hop on the trend that started with Flamin’ Hot Cheetos and ended with the whole packaged food world in metaphorical flames. That’s right: Spicy mainstream candy is here. And I don’t mean some habanero mango flavored Skittle (although, @Skittles, I’m not NOT saying that would be great, if you catch my drift). No, we are finally getting the complex little candy hero this world deserves: Skittles coated in a chili lime powder, aka Skittles Fuego. This is not a (fire) drill. These new spicy Skittles are coming to GoPuff next week.
Are Skittles Fuego just straight-up Tajin on Skittles? What Skittles flavors are involved? How can I get involved? If I call my congressman, can he help?
Okay, these new spicy Skittles are not Tajin branded, but the peppery coating sure looks a whole lot like Tajin. My main question is whether it will truly just be chili and lime or if it will be salty as well, because, hooooo boi, would salt be good on these. I tried to find a review from someone who had tried Skittles En Fuego (a similar product from back in the early 2000s that was only available in Mexico), but there truly wasn’t much out there about them to give us a frame of reference.
These aren’t the first spicy Skittles to hit stores in the U.S.: Back in 2018, Mars debuted Skittles Sweet Heat, which contained spicy versions of Watermelon, Orange, Lemon, Strawberry, and Mango. Although they were meant to be spicy, a reviewer at the time called them “not hot enough to ruin your day.” It’s important to note, though, that Sweet Heat Skittles were all internally spicy (coincidentally also how my friend describes her IBS), which it seems will not be the case for these new Skittles Fuego, which have spicy seasoning on the outside. The outside of what, you ask? Why, the standard Skittles flavors, of course: Strawberry, Orange, Lemon, Lime, and Grape. So yes, these will be exactly like those spicy Skittles made by a random grandma that you can sometimes find at your local market. Some people online are a bit worried Skittles is coming for people’s side hustles what with their announcement of Freeze-Dried Skittles earlier this year and now Skittles Fuego, but I don’t know. These look good, but I’m not so sure they can compete with chamoy and Tajin Skittles.
As for how to get them—call your local congressman! Just kidding! Please do that, but not about this. You can get these new spicy Skittles exclusively on GoPuff.com (which is sort of like quicker, more local Amazon for household items, food, and alcohol) and they will be available starting Monday, September 30. Starting next week, we can all live out our spicy Skittles dreams.
