When Peanut Butter M&M’s first released, I was sure Mars had peaked: They are definitely the best standard-size M&Ms ever made—but mini M&M’s are still better. Then they came out with Peanut Butter M&M’s Minis, and the best kind of M&M’s got even better! Mega M&M’s are my least favorite size of M&M’s (in my opinion, bigger is rarely better for candy), but the Peanut Butter version is definitely the best of those, too. I could go on and on but it’s simple stuff, people: Peanut Butter M&M’s are the supreme type of M&M’s.
So, imagine my surprise when a new variant of Peanut Butter M&M’s was revealed on an industry website. Stop the presses: Peanut Butter & Jelly M&M’s are coming soon… ish.
How are they getting jelly into M&M’s?
Great question! At this time, all we have to go off of is the picture on the packaging. Per that render, the M&M’s look identical to a regular Peanut Butter M&M’s. Is the peanut butter filling flavored? Maybe! Did they flavor the candy shell? Possibly! Is the official render of PB&J M&M’s not ready yet, so they used regular Peanut Butter M&M’s as a placeholder? Honestly, that’s downright plausible.
Back in 2009, Strawberried Peanut Butter M&Ms came out as a promotional product for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. That release featured a strawberry flavor baked into either the candy shell or milk chocolate (the 15-year-old reviews I’ve read can’t agree where exactly they hid the flavor). The new PB&J version has yet to reveal exactly which fruit the eponymous “jelly” is based on; time will tell whether this is just a stealth re-release of that long-gone M&M variant.
Where did you find this picture anyway?
To make a long story short, the image seen above was part of an online database of products being showcased at an upcoming trade event for convenience store owners. This site actually has so many new drinks and snacks on display that we’re rounding up the most interesting ones for a news article coming soon right here on Sporked.
A few junk food influencers began reporting on the products found in these databases, which resulted in many of the images being replaced with generic names like “M&M’s New Product” to try and quell the early talk. They try their best to keep things secret, but we’re just too damn good around here.
When can I try these new M&M’s?
We have no idea! It’s likely that this one is coming in 2025, but beyond that, we won’t know for a little while longer. No release date or retailer information was attached to the product image, and no little birdies at Mars have shared the 2025 innovation calendar with us yet (my DMs are open). Peanut butter and jelly isn’t a particularly seasonal flavor, so it isn’t even something we can nail down to a quarter of the year. We might get more information when that trade event takes place this October, but it could be kept secret a little longer. Rest assured; when we know, you’ll know.
UPDATE!
As of September 19, we now know that the rumors were, indeed, true! M&M’s Peanut Butter & Jelly will be available nationwide in December, 2024. The brand says that the flavor of the jelly is berry, which sets these new M&M’s apart from the previous Strawberried Peant Butter M&M’s. M&M’s Peanut Butter & Jelly will be available in single serving bags (1.63oz), share bags (2.83 oz), and sharing stand up pouches (8.6oz). Check back with us closer to their release date for a full review of how they taste!
