5 Monster Cereals, Ranked from Boo to Woo!

The only real Halloween cereal is the lineup of General Mills monster cereals. Yeah, yeah, there are Haunted Lucky Charms and Reese’s Puffs Bats, but true Halloween cereal begins and ends with Franken Berry, Boo Berry, Count Chocula, and, the newest addition, Carmella Creeper.

But what’s the best monster cereal out of those four spooky stalwarts (plus the new Monsters’ Frightful Friends cereal)? The Sporked team sat down to bowlfuls of each one, tasted them, and ranked them from scarily so-so to eerily excellent. Read on for the full ranking of these Halloween cereals. Note: This year, General Mills released new versions of the classic monster cereals with “marshmallow pets” aka little mini marshmallows in the mix. Those are the versions we tried.

Boo Berry

Vocally inspired by Peter Lorre (you might know him from Casablanca, he’s the little guy with big eyes), Boo Berry, per General Mills, is a “lovable little ghost” who is “scared of his own self.” I can absolutely relate to Boo in that respect, but, unfortunately, his blueberry-flavored cereal just didn’t wow the Sporked tasting team. Don’t get me wrong, all of these monster cereals are pretty good and satisfying in a sweet, nostalgic kind of way. But Boo Berry just didn’t pack the same level of flavor as the other Halloween cereals on this list.

Franken Berry

Also inspired by a classic film legend, Franken Berry’s looks are rooted in Boris Karloff’s famous portrayal of the reanimated monster. But I’m pretty sure Karloff’s monster didn’t have nail art. Franken Berry has little strawberry nails. Supes cute. His cereal is light in flavor, much like Boo Berry, but you can detect some faux strawberry in the mix. That bright strawberry flavor pairs really well with the crispy, airy texture. And the cereal bits are such a fun, super-bright pink color.

Carmella Creeper

General Mills describes Carmella as a “cool, young and very capable young Zombie.” They really want you to know that she’s young. She’s also a DJ. And, apparently, she’s Franken Berry’s cousin. She’s also the brand’s first female monster cereal mascot, #girlpower. Aside from all of her accomplishments, her cereal is pretty incredible. It really does taste like caramel apple—if slightly heavier on the caramel than the apple. It’s good and it’s unique and it’s perfect for the season.

Monsters’ Frightful Friends

This year, General Mills introduced a new monster cereal to the line-up. It’s a mix of all the monster cereals and their “marshmallow pets.” And it’s great. It’s a spooky melange of all the flavors. If you ever used to mix your Trix with your Cocoa Puffs, you’re going to love this cereal. The flavors all combine to taste like “cereal” in its most generic (but still delicious) sense. And it turns the milk gray. Spoooooky.

Count Chocula

Count Chocula

Based on Bela Lugosi’s Dracula, Count Chocula is, per the brand, “a bit of a diva.” But his cereal is so good, he is well within his rights to act like that. The puffs are so chocolaty but also so airy and crispy. They turn the milk super chocolaty almost immediately. So good. So chocolatey. It’s like Cocoa Puffs but airier and with more give. And the marshmallows in this year’s edition of Count Chocula really highlight the chocolatey-ness. This is one of the best chocolate cereals you can buy, period, and definitely the best Halloween cereal available. Congrats, Count!
