Best Dijon Mustard to Give Your Sandwiches a Certain Je Ne Sais Quoi

The best dijon mustard is pungent. The flavor should slap you in the face the moment you slather it on anything. I love mustard. Our team loves mustard. It’s time for the dijon mustard ranking!

Over the course of two separate taste tests, we served ourselves spoonfuls of mustard to determine which is truly the best dijon mustard for sandwiches, mayo-based salads, and dressings. Whether it’s creamy dijon mustard or whole grain dijon mustard, we were looking for mustard that’s pungent and bold. Something that makes the hairs on the inside of your nose stand up. If you also like your mustard to have a little attitude, this is the best dijon mustard at the grocery store.

Best Whole Grain

Trader Joe’s Whole Grain Dijon Mustard

If you want to go full, unapologetic grain, this Trader Joe’s Whole Grain Dijon Mustard is the best dijon mustard you can buy. When they say whole grain dijon mustard, they really mean whole grain dijon mustard. I would totally understand if someone wasn’t into this type of mustard, but as a fan of all mustard types, I love it. To me, this is like mustard caviar. It explodes in your mouth when you eat it. This would add a fun texture to potato salad or look super fancy on a deviled egg. (If you’re also into whole grain mustard, check out our ranking of all the best whole grain mustard.)

Best for Sandwiches

Inglehoffer Traditional Dijon Mustard

Inglehoffer describes their Traditional Dijon Mustard as “sweet,” which feels wild to me because it’s one of the stronger mustards we tasted. While there may be some disagreement between us here at Sporked and the company, we love this mustard. Not only did we like the piquancy, we liked the packaging. This is the best dijon mustard for sandwiches because the bottle makes it easy to squeeze, either on the whole sandwich as you make it or onto each bite as you eat it (my preferred method).

Best for Cooking

Edmond Fallot Dijon Mustard

According to the jar, Edmond Fallot “grinds its mustard seeds using antique millstones in Beaune, France.” Fancy! Those antique millstones are really onto something because this mustard has a dreamy creaminess that makes it the best dijon mustard for cooking. The flavor sits at the sweet spot in between subtle and bold. It’s powerful enough to hold up to other big flavors but mild enough that it would meld with other ingredients in a recipe. Reach for this dijon the next time you’re making vinaigrette, or plop a spoonful into a cream sauce to top chicken.

Best Coarse Ground

Grey Poupon Country Dijon Mustard

No wonder people kept this brand of mustard in their glove compartments. It’s delicious! Grey Poupon Country Dijon Mustard has the perfect texture, in my opinion. The base is luxuriously creamy and it’s full of roughly ground grains of mustard that add a great mouthfeel. I would dip crunchy pretzels into this or smear it onto a loaded sandwich. This is the best dijon mustard if you like a little creaminess along with your mustard seeds.

Best Splurge

Sir Kensington’s Dijon Mustard

Sir Kensington’s Dijon Mustard tastes as fancy as it sounds. It comes in a glass jar and is made with wine (specifically Chablis, a dry white wine from Burgundy, France). It has a more delicate dijon flavor than some of the other mustards we tried. Gwynedd Stuart, Sporked managing editor, wanted to dip a big, warm soft pretzel into this fancy mustard and, quite frankly, same.

Best Honey Dijon

Maille Honey Dijon

I think honey dijon mustard is perfect. It’s sweet, salty, and tangy. It really is among the best dijon mustard for sandwiches. And when it comes to honey dijon, this version from Maille is perfect. It hits every single taste bud on your tongue. It’s not surprising at all, though. Maille’s regular dijon is the best dijon mustard we tried of them all!

Best Budget

Great Value Dijon Mustard

You might be saying, “Jordan, is Walmart’s dijon mustard really as good as a world-renowned French mustard?” And to that, I say, “Almost!” While nothing can quite live up to Maille, Great Value comes surprisingly close. It’s sharp and vinegary and smooth. The best part? It’s under $1, so you can use it generously. This is the best dijon mustard if you aren’t in the mood to splurge.

Best of the Best

Maille Dijon Originale

If you’re looking for the punchiest, zestiest, best dijon mustard on the market, Maille is the best dijon mustard brand, hands down. Maille mustard has been around since 1747, so when you eat it you’re getting a taste of French history. The company even claims that Marquise de Pompadour, Louis XV’s mistress, was a loyal customer back in the day. And I believe it, because flash forward to today and I am a huge fan. This mustard has a sharp finish and an aggressive mustard flavor. Maille is so pungent that I would recommend pairing it with something simple. Slather it on a baguette with thinly shaved ham and gruyere. Mix it with good quality mayonnaise and dip french fries in it. Smear some onto a hard-boiled egg. Whatever you do, let the Maille shine!

  • You should do a ranking of hot mustards, one brand I recommend that you may not be familiar with is called “Zakuson” it’s a Russian style mustard that I personally like more than any American, English, French, or German, style mustards I’ve had though it might just be personal preference.

    • Zakuson (Закусон) literally translates from Russian as “chaser to alcohol.” It’s too horseradish-y for me personally but I can’t argue with you that it belongs in the category!
